Dental Prosthetics

Dentists check dental work on a model in the dental practice

Dental prosthetics deals with replacing teeth when they are missing. Among the dental works that Dental Elite offers are: Dental crowns, fixed, semi-mobile (sprung) prostheses and Removable dentures.

Dental crowns are indicated in the following cases:

  • for protecting a tooth whose structure is weakened, for example, after endodontic treatment;
  • For the restoration of a fractured tooth or one that is too extensively decayed to be restored with fillings;
  • Restoring a tooth with massive fillings when the dentine walls are very thin and the tooth could fracture.;
  • for bonding a dental bridge;
  • to cover teeth with severe discolouration or unsightly shapes;
  • for a dental implant => see the Implantology section.

Dental bridges restore a missing tooth by creating a „bridge” over the gap; this involves making a pontic (bridge body) with a crown on each of the abutment teeth. The crowns are cemented onto the adjacent teeth to support the false tooth. When there are abutment teeth on only one side of the extraction site, cantilever bridges can be made.

Dental bridges are used to:

  • replacing missing tooth/teeth;
  • balances a normal „bite”;
  • protects the edentulous crest from potentially harmful pressures;
  • prevents migration of antagonist teeth;
  • prevents migration and tilting of adjacent teeth;
  • Prevents decay of neighbouring teeth.;
  • The installation is delayed periodontal disease.

To make a bridge, the dentist must prepare the adjacent teeth to make space for crowns; the dentist then takes an impression which is sent to the laboratory, where the crown itself is made. Depending on the type of crown chosen, one or more try-in appointments at the practice and laboratory may be necessary. These bridges and crowns require special cleaning methods which will be shown to you by Dentist. Irregular brushing and inadequate, the misuse of dental floss, rare visits to Dentist and excessive consumption of sugar and carbohydrate-rich products will reduce the lifespan of bridges and crowns and will damage the abutment teeth onto which they are cemented.

Dentures

It represents the traditional and cheapest way to replace missing teeth. Full dentures („dentures”) simulate the natural appearance of teeth and gums and are used for chewing. Most full dentures They are made from acrylic resins and composite materials. Generally, the patient can choose one of the options:

  • traditional acrylic full dentures;
  • full acrylic dentures with a metal base for strength;
  • Flexible dentures (Valplast);
  • Flexible prostheses (Valplast) with metal reinforcement.

There are two types of acrylic dentures:

  • full acrylic dentures which replace all teeth and the gum;
  • partial acrylic dentures which replace one or more teeth when there are still healthy teeth on the arch.

The majority of patients with full acrylic dentures there are elderly patients who have lost all their teeth, whereas wearers of partial acrylic dentures, generally suffers from Periodontal disease The teeth were lost due to accidents, which is accompanied by bone defects. All patients treated with acrylic dentures benefits from improved chewing function, better phonation, easier oral hygiene and, last but not least, an improved aesthetic appearance.

Acrylic prostheses They are made for each individual patient, respecting the anatomical peculiarities of the oral cavity. Initially, they are felt as a foreign object, however well made they may be; subsequently, after a short adaptation period, most people no longer notice their presence in the oral cavity.

Regular dental check-ups They are beneficial as the dentist can detect changes occurring in the oral cavity. If remaining teeth tilt or if the bone shape changes over time, a new denture might be needed.
